Yes, SF has greatly increased the number of "off-topic" political threads (to generate traffic in slow news times?) but you can avoid those. And often someone is desparately needed to counter the frequent threads endorsing extreme hyper-Calvinist views... I am sure your participation is more valued than you realize.
